Joel Embiid could be playing for Team France in the next Olympics, as reported by theScore sighted by Liberiabasketball.net on their verified Twitter account.

Joel Hans Embiid is a Cameroonian professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association. After one year of college basketball with the Kansas Jayhawks, he was drafted with the third overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft by the 76ers (Wikipedia).

The report went on to state that he has started the administrative process to obtain French nationality and plans to play with Team France.

Not many netizens are happy with the news, especially those from Africa and see this as a loss to African basketball.

One commented:

Colonizers already took all of Africa for the football team, now they’re doing the same for basketball. Jesus.

The Cameroon national basketball team represents Cameroon in men’s international competitions. It is administered by the Fédération Camerounaise de Basketball.

Once an only average team, Cameroon has turned into a major force and contender for the title of the African Basketball Championship. Their best achievement was reaching the Silver Medal in 2007. Since the late 2000s, the team has competed well against non-African competition, too.

Other notable players on the team includes Pascal Siakam and Luc Mbah a Moute, both with NBA experience.
